9 ways to make apartment hunting much less daunting

- Better Business Bureau

Summertime is upon us, and it’s a prime time to find the right apartment. Searching for an apartment can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time.

Whether you’re a college student moving off-campus for the first time, newlyweds looking for a first home, moving for a new job or a couple looking to downsize, it’s important to be prepared and take precautions to find the best fit.

When looking for an apartment, it’s important to be aware that some ads may not be legitimate. Scammers regularly advertise rentals that don’t exist or aren’t available. They also clone rental listings and change the contact information, placing the altered ads in several newspapers or websites.

BBB offers tips for finding an apartment:

Decide where you want to start your search. Online databases are popular resources, as well as Craigslist and fliers.

Network with friends and family to start your search.

Set a price range for rent you’d like to stay between and keep in mind options, such as having a furnished/unfurnished apartment or having utilities included in rent.

Determine the location’s convenience. Find the nearest grocery store, gas station and bank. See how far your commute to work would be.

Check out the neighborhood and things like parking and public transport.

Visit the property. While touring the apartment, make sure you search for signs of hazards, such as mold, dust, leakage or damage from the last tenant. If there is damage, make sure the landlord acknowledges it so you aren’t held responsible for it.

Check cellphone service in each room and test the shower and all the sinks to ensure they work properly.

Read over the lease before signing, and make sure you understand your responsibilities and the landlord’s responsibilities. Get everything in writing. If there is a problem you want fixed by move-in day, make sure you and your landlord are on the same page. Keep a copy of the signed lease.

Consider renters insurance. There may even be a minimum amount of renters insurance required.

Scammers can lurk around every corner, and the apartment search isn’t exempt. Get a list of BBB Accredited apartments by visiting bbb.org or calling 937222-2825 or 800-776-5301. You can also get Business Profiles on the owners of sites you’re considering calling home.
