was the second-string quarterback last season. Redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins and true freshman Tate Martell are the other candidates.

“Tate is in the mix,” Meyer said. “Tate gives us a weapon. He’s done some really nice things for us. He’s still getting a grasp of the offense, but I’d say the true backup right now is between Joe and Dwayne.” Meyer praised the improved accuracy and the energy level of Barrett, the fifthyear senior who will start his third season opener.

“He’s providing that energy for everybody,” Meyer said. “He’s always done that. He’s got complete ownership of everything going on in that offense.”

Martell may be a long shot to earn playing time, but he continues to earn raves in practice.

“I think he’s a very confident guy,” Meyer said. “He’s a guy that’s had great success as a player in the bright lights of one of the top high school programs in America. I just love where he’s at right now. I love his mentality. I love the look in his eye. I love the fact that he understands

Early impact:

he’s got work to do, and it’s not going to be easy.”

This position also remains open. Meyer said Malcolm Pridgeon, Branden Bowen, Demetrius Knox and Matt Burrell are competing for the starting job.

“We’re starting to get it solidified,” Meyer said. “I’ll probably give you something this weekend. We’ll see how it goes.”

Right-guard spot: New scholarships:

Ohio State awarded scholarships to walk-ons Elijaah Goins, a senior wide receiver, and Zach Turnure, a senior linebacker, on Saturday.

Meyer said awarding scholarships to walk-ons is the favorite thing he gets to do as a coach.

Freshman update:

Meyer expects more freshmen to get the black stripe removed from their helmets this week. The freshmen wear them until they prove themselves to the coaches.

Defensive end Chase Young, running back J.K. Dobbins and safety Isaiah Pryor were the first three to see their stripes removed.

“This is a really good class,” Meyer said, “and they’re going to contribute.”
