As members of the Class of 2017 prepare to take the next step this fall, members of the Class of 2018 are stepping up as the new leaders at their schools. What do both groups need to know to be successful? We asked the experts.

To the Class of 2018:

“It’s easy to get caught up in all of the college applications and scholarships, but make sure to take time for yourself and the friendships you have made! This is the last year you will have with most of these people, some of whom have been with you for the last 13 years. Work hard and enjoy yourself!” — Max Williams, 2017 OHS graduate

To the Class of 2018:

“My advice would be to hang out with your class as much as you can because you will miss them more than you think. I would also say to go to as many events as you can and support your classmates because it is one of the best feelings to have your class supporting you at whatever you do. But most importantly, have fun and don’t stress too much. Enjoy senior year.”

— Brock Gorman, 2017 OHS graduate To the Class of 2017:

“Join at least one club you weren’t involved with in high school, like Quiz Bowl, the film society or an intramural sport. If you don’t enjoy it, you can always quit, but you’ll make new friends and learn different skills by trying it out. Take advantage of all the resources your school has to offer — the career center, professors’ office hours and other events on campus. These are all really great ways to learn and develop skills if you’re willing to take the initiative. Get to know the area around your school — whether it’s a city or a small college town, there’s something interesting and different that you’ll only find if you get out of the campus bubble!” — Ally Ross, 2016 OHS graduate

To the Class of 2017:

“Be honest with yourself. Use this time to discover your true passions and to pursue them. Be critical of what you like and don’t like, and build a network of people around you whose opinions you value and trust.” — Elisabeth Crusey, 2016 OHS graduate

To the Class of 2017:

“I would strongly recommend that all Class of 2017 members do the following; thank your family and friends for their continual support, make a bucket list and prepare for the next best four years of your lives. Being thankful for the love and encouragement from friends and family is very essential before traveling miles away to college. It’s a great way to give back to those who helped us get to where we are today by sending a simple ‘thank you’ card. And remember, Oakwood will always be your home and go Lumberjacks!” — Emma Flanagan, 2016 OHS graduate
