three-fourths of the year with a sprained left shoulder that required offseason surgery.

Running back Leonard Fournette (left foot), wide receiver Marqise Lee (sprained right ankle) and cornerback A.J. Bouye (undisclosed) — three starters — were ruled out for Thursday’s preseason game against Carolina. Backups running back T.J. Yeldon (hamstring) and tight end Michael Rivera (hand) also won’t play, coach Doug Marrone said.

Quarterback Cam Newton (sore right shoulder) and rookie wide receiver Curtis Samuel (hamstring), the team’s second-round pick, are on pace to play Thursday against the Jaguars after missing the first two preseason games rehabbing from injuries. Two-time All-Pro center Ryan Kalli also practiced after sitting out two games with a shoulder injury and could play.

Wide receiver John Brown practiced and said his quadriceps injury felt much better. He hopes to play Saturday against the Falcons.

Matthew Stafford and his agent, Tom Condon, are negotiating terms of a contract that may make the quarterback the NFL’s highest-paid player. Stafford, entering the last season of his $53 million, three-year contract, might start the ninth season of his career with a deal richer than the $125 million, five-year extension the Raiders gave quarterback Derek Carr two months ago. Stafford insisted he hasn’t decided if he’ll allow talks to continue into the season.

Chuck Pagano expects more out of the offense, so the coach is changing it up. Quarterback Stephen Morris is expected to reclaim the No. 2 job behind Scott Tolzien on Saturday at Pittsburgh. Rookie running back Marlon Mack should get more chances on third down and in two-minute drills. And Pagano may tinker again with the banged up offensive line. The only thing off-limits would be a cameo appearance from three-time Pro Bowl QB Andrew Luck, who remains on the physically-unable-to-perform list. “This is a man’s game and it’s tough and there are no

pity parties,” Pagano said. “Everybody understands where we’re at and what we have to do moving forward.”

Coach Todd Bowles said he will announce the team’s starting quarterback Monday for their season opener on Sept. 10 at Buffalo. Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are in the mix, but McCown is the front-runner since signing a one-year, $6 million deal in March.

Coach John Harbaugh canceled practice Monday to take his team on a tour of the Pentagon and a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. “How fortunate and blessed are we to experience a day like this,” Harbaugh said. “It’s humbling, and we are so appreciative.” The Ravens are also off today, giving the players three days to prepare for Saturday’s preseason home opener against the Bills.
