Pop superstar and newly minted “American Idol” judge Katy Perry tries her hand at hosting this buzzy gala from The Forum in Inglewood. Performers for the 34th annual event include Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, Fifth Harmony, Lorde, Miley Cyrus, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, Thirty Seconds to Mars and more. This year’s VMAs break barriers by eliminatin­g gendered categories and trading in the “Moonman” trophy for a “Moon Person.” 8 p.m. Sunday, MTV.

We’ll gladly bend the knee for tonight’s highly anticipate­d 81-minute season finale of “Game of Thrones.” But we’re still bummed out that we only got a measly seven episodes this year. 9 p.m., HBO.

The month of programmin­g dedicated to the “People’s Princess” continues with “Diana: The Day We Said Goodbye.” The special recounts stories behind her funeral, from the royal florist devastated by Prince Harry’s card to “Mummy,” to the pallbearer­s who struggled just to stay on their feet. 9 p.m., Smithsonia­n.

The wild times on “Preacher” continue tonight, but it turns out that Jesse’s pursuit of God is alienating Tulip and Cassidy. That’s can’t be good. 9 p.m., AMC.

It marks the first and only time her two sons — Princes William and Henry — have done on-camera interviews about that week. 8 p.m., NBC.

In the TV film “The Perfect Catch,” a woman finds the inspiratio­n to reinvent her struggling diner when her high school boyfriend — now a baseball superstar — returns to town. Sounds like a great double-play combinatio­n. 9 p.m., Hallmark.
