A man died at Miami KETTERING — Valley Hospital after being shot Sunday evening by a Kettering police officer, according to the Kettering Police Department and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Police from across the area responded around 6:50 p.m. to Bataan Drive near Craig Drive in Kettering after an unnamed police officer shot a man who got out of a minivan and pointed a gun at the officer, according to witnesses.

Residents said the man pointed his gun at the Kettering officer, who ordered the gunman to drop the handgun. When the suspect did not, they said the officer fired his weapon. CPR was underway when additional officers and medics arrived. The man was taken by ambulance to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died.

A woman who had run from the gray minivan and another man were seen in handcuffs inside the yellow police tape zone. The third man’s role in the incident — and whether he was in the vehicle — was unclear.

The officer did not appear to be injured, residents said.

Residents said the neighborhood is typically quiet.

“It’s very scary,” said Ashlei Back, a resident. “The cop was out with his big rifle and was yelling, ‘get down, get down.’”

Sunday’s incident is believed to be the first fatal shooting involving a Kettering police officer in years.

The Dayton Daily News I-Team’s officer involved shooting database — which keeps a tally of area officer involved shootings since 1995 — does not show any shootings involving a Kettering officer during that time period.

On Feb. 2, a 15-year-old wielding a replica handgun was shot

by a Centerville police officer in that suburb’s first officer involved shooting in decades. Days later, on Feb. 5, an Englewood police officer shot Shelly Porter III in an altercation. The 41-yearold man later died at Miami Valley Hospital.

On July 4, an Ohio State trooper shot and killed a Hamilton County man in Vandalia.

The man, Dana D. Dubose, rammed his car into the back of the trooper’s car while the trooper was conducting a traffic stop involving a separate vehicle. Dubose got out of his car and approached the trooper brandishing a knife, according to state police. The trooper fired after the man ignored verbal commands.

Investigators later learned Dubose was a suspect in the homicide the night before of his wife, Princess Brown, of Springfield Twp., Hamilton County.

There were four officer involved shootings in Montgomery County in 2016, according to the I-Team’s database. Two of the individuals shot by police were killed.
