Members have been selected for the Miami Valley team that will compete in the 17th Ohio Intrastate Golf Matches Sept. 29 in Massillon.

They are: Pete Betzold, Chris Coleman, Paul Day, Dan Devore, Brandon Johnson, Brady Marinangeli, Dave Novotny, Ryan Reichley, Pete Samborsky, Tal Selby, Emery Shumaker and Austin Sipe.

Devore, Novotny, Selby and Shumaker are the senior players on the team, which is selected based on the Miami Valley Golf Association’s point system for performances over the last two years. Jeff Scohy, who was qualified to participate, declined because of personal obligations.

Samborsky will make his 11th appearance in the matches and Devore his ninth. Austin Sipe, who won the Ohio Amateur championship in July, is on the team for the first time, as is Paul Day.

The biennial matches will be held at Shady Hollow Country Club. They bring together Ohio’s best players ages 25 and older from the state’s five regional golf associations.

The 10 best scores of 12 are used to determine the team score in the 18-hole event. In previous competions, Columbus has eight wins, Miami Valley has five, Northern Ohio has two and Greater Cincinnati has one.

The 18-hole ladies group at Dayton Country Club has a new event for women that will raise money for different charities and raise awareness of those causes.

The first event is Sept. 22 at DCC and the recipient will be the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Dayton Region. Funds will go directly to Dayton’s Out of the Darkness Walk, which is Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. at Oakwood High School, according to Sallie Wilson Luther, chair of the event.

The golf tournament is open to any women in the Dayton area who have a United States Golf Association GHIN handicap. It is a four-person team event with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. For more details, visit www.miamivalleygolf. org or call (937) 294-6842.

Miami Valley teams compete in October:

NCR Country Club is the defending champion in the Miami Valley Team Invitational that will be held Oct. 12 at Sugar Valley Golf Club. Last year NCR’s team of Matt Buse, Drake Dunaway, Eric Eby, Doug Gage, Roger Johnson, Evan Marinangeli, Justin McClain and Dave Novotny won by two strokes over Piqua Country Club’s entry.

Miami Valley Golf Club won the first two events in 1994 and 1995, and a strong Greene Country Club team won seven straight from 1996 through 2002. Since then, NCR has won five times and Brown’s Run three times. Teams from Country Club of the North and Sycamore Creek have won twice and Springfield Country Club and Walnut Grove have one title each.

The largest field in the event was 16 teams in 2000 at Miami Valley. The 2010 competition at Country Club of the North drew the smallest field, seven. Steve Jurick, executive director of the Miami Valley Golf Association, said it’s too soon to tell how many clubs will enter the 2017 competition.

Walnut Grove hosts final Masters Event:

The fourth and final Miami Valley Masters event of the season, scheduled for Sept. 21 at Sugar Valley Golf Club, has been moved to Walnut Grove Country Club because Sugar Valley could not provide postround dinner indoors.

When the event was scheduled by the Miami Valley Golf Association, it was with the expectation that the new Sugar Valley clubhouse would be ready for occupation.
