Dragons advance to second round with victory in 11th

-

Cassidy Brown scored from third base on a passed ball with one out in the top of the 11th inning to lift the Dayton Dragons past the West Michigan Whitecaps 4-3 in the deciding game of its Midwest League Eastern Division playoff series on Friday night.

With the win, the Dragons advanced to the second round of the playoffs against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The second round series is also a best-of-three set and it began Saturday night in Fort Wayne. Game 2 is today (7 p.m.) at Fifth Third Field in Dayton. If a third game is necessary, it also will be played in Dayton.

The Whitecaps forced extra innings by scoring two runs with two outs in the ninth on a Dragons error.

Brown led off the top of the 11th with a double to the right-field corner. He went to third on Carlos Rivero’s sacrifice and scored on a pitch in the dirt that went to the backstop. Alex Webb pitched a perfect bottom of the 11th.

Michael Beltre had three hits, while Bruce Yari and Randy Ventura had two apiece for the Dragons.

Reyes leads Mets past Reds:

Jose Reyes homered twice and Seth Lugo pitched six shutout innings as New York beat Cincinnati 5-1 for its third straight win Friday.

Travis Taijeron got the Mets started when the 28-year-old rookie led off the second with his first major league home run. New York, which leads the National League in homers, has won 17 of its last 19 games against the Reds — including eight straight at Citi Field.

Reyes went deep off Amir Garrett (3-7) in the fifth, scoring Lugo and giving New York a 4-0 lead. Reyes also clubbed a solo shot in the third, becoming the 13th player to hit 100 homers in a Mets uniform.

Lugo (6-4) allowed four hits and walked one in his first win since July 25. A.J. Ramos got two outs for his 27th save.
