The Emmys are tonight; ‘Thrones’ isn’t eligible

Dayton Daily News - - LIFE - By Chuck Barney

Don’t miss: “The 69th Emmy Awards”:

Stephen Colbert is our host for TV’s big bash, which will look a little different this year. Two-time drama champ “Game of Thrones” is sitting it out (the show didn’t air during the eligibility period), leaving the door open for breakout newcomers like “This Is Us,” “Stranger Things” “Westworld” and “The Crown.” In addition, several fresh faces — Donald Glover, Claire Foy, Chrissy Metz and more — are joining the festivities. But some things remain the same: “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus is gunning for her sixth straight win as best lead actress in a comedy. 8 p.m. Sunday, CBS.

Other bets

Today: Brace yourself: Ken Burns is bringing another epic documentary to television. “The Vietnam War” is an incredible 10-part, 18-hour series that explores one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history. Included: Rarely seen archival footage, audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations, and interviews with nearly 80 witnesses. 8 p.m., PBS.

Today: As the uproarious comedy “Vice Principals” returns for its second and final season, it’s a new semester at North Jackson High School and big changes are in store. Gamby and Russell will soon learn that the only thing harder than gaining power is holding on to it. 10:30 p.m., HBO.

Monday: Break out the sequins and spray tans. “Dancing With the Stars” launches its 25th season with 13 alleged celebrities, including Debbie Gibson, Barbara Corcoran, Drew Scott, Terrell Owens, Derek Fisher and others. Don’t be embarrassed, we had to Google some of them, too. 8 p.m., ABC.

Monday: We’re out of breath from just watching “American Ninja Warrior.” At last, they’ll crown a champion tonight as the top competitors tackle the last stages of the “Mount Midoriyama” obstacle course. 8 p.m., NBC.

Tuesday: In the Season 3 premiere of “If Loving You Is Wrong,” the small fictional community of Maxine is left reeling after an incident threatens the lives of its children. 9 p.m., OWN.

Wednesday: The summer’s most popular reality series, “America’s Got Talent,” finally crowns its Season 12 winner, but not before making us sit through a bloated twohour finale. 8 p.m., NBC.

Wednesday: In another twohour finale, “MasterChef ” names its Season 8 champion after the final contestants prepare a threecourse meal with ingredients of their choosing. 8 p.m., Fox.

Thursday: Another turbocharged season of “Zoo” comes to an end as the team races to stop the hybrids from breaching the barrier wall by shutting down the last beacon that draws them in. We wish them luck. 10 p.m., CBS.

Friday: Fans of “Battlestar Galactica” (the acclaimed reboot), rejoice. Tonight brings a re-airing of the 2003 miniseries, which will lead into a weekend marathon of the entire first season of the military space drama. 8 p.m., Syfy.

Saturday: “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” makes its cable debut. Super rogue warrior Alice (Milla Jovovich) joins her friends on a last-chance mission to defeat the evil Umbrella Corporation and its ravenous hordes of monsters and demons. 8 p.m., Starz.
