Man given 13 years for murdering wife

-

An Akron man who shot his wife to death earlier this year has been sentenced to 13 years in state prison.

Donald Alexander Sr., 52, had pleaded guilty in late August in Summit County Common Pleas Court to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He originally was charged with murder and felonious assault, but pleaded to the lesser charge as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

Common Pleas Judge Joy Malek-Oldfield issued the sentence Monday, Oct. 2.

Alexander shot and killed his wife, Shannon Meyer, 37, on Feb. 24 after a quarrel in their home. Meyer was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head about 5:30 a.m. accused of robbing a bank Saturday morning.

The robbery happened about 10:30 a.m. at The Unity Catholic Federal Credit Union on Madison Avenue near Hilliard Boulevard, according to a Lakewood police report.

No one was hurt. The three boys, two ages 17 and one age 16, walked into the bank and each walked away with an undisclosed amount of money, Lakewood police Capt. Ed Hassing said.

Lakewood police would not say whether a gun was used in the robbery, or if any of the boys threatened to harm any bank employees.

A witness saw the youngest of the teens walking on the side street north of the credit union after the robbery, police said. Police arrested him.

The two other teens were arrested at school Monday once police figured out who they were, Hassing said.

The case will be presented to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court once police complete their investigation.
