YELLOW SPRINGS — A bite of Big Apple talent will be at the core of the first concert of the season for Chamber Music in Yellow Springs.

The Calidore String Quartet captured the 2013 Competition for Emerging Professional Ensembles sponsored by Chamber Music in Yellow Springs and will return to open the 34th season at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8 in the First Presbyterian Church, 314 Xenia Ave.

The Quartet hardly rested on that accolade, coming off winning the inaugural International M Prize, the world’s largest prize for chamber music, in 2016, and is currently in residence at New York’s Lincoln Center.

The set list will include Haydn’s “Quartet in D major, Opus 64, No. 5, ‘The Lark’”; Janacek’s “Quartet No. 1, ‘Kreutzer’”; and Beethoven’s “Quartet in E-flat major, Opus 127.”

“This will be the first opportunity for local audiences to hear the latter in the 34-year history of Chamber Music in Yellow Springs,” said Celia Diamond, the group’s publicity chair.

The Calidore String Quartet won’t finish there. On Monday, the group will do an outreach program at Yellow Springs’ Mills Lawn Elementary School. Diamond said the goal is to promote music learning and help build the future classical music audience.

The evening will begin with the preconcert lecture led by Wright State University Professor Emeritus Chuck Larkowski at 6:45 p.m.

Chamber Music in Yellow Springs’ 2017-2018 season will include four concerts including Project Fusion Saxophone Quartet on Oct. 29, the Bennewitz String Quartet from the Czech Republic on Feb. 11 and the Brazilian String Quartet on March 25.

The season will conclude with the 33rd Annual Competition for Emerging Professional Ensembles on April 29.

Tickets cost $25 per concert for adults and $7 for fulltime students (with ID) online in advance or at the door.

Season tickets cost $100 for adults and $25 for students.
