With the rise of kabuki theaters in the pleasure quarters of Japan as a popular form of mass entertainment, many woodblock prints depicted these theatrical scenes. Each year, Renate Frydman and her family honor the memory of her grandfather Max May, an artist and architect, by sponsoring an art contest that encourages area students in grades 5-12 to focus on the Holocaust as an inspiration for a world that is free of racism, disrespect and intolerance.
