Other uses for plastic shower caps

Dear Readers: If you have used or saved the disposable plastic shower caps provided by hotels or motels, there are many uses for them other than in the shower.

Protect shoes when you travel by putting them inside the caps. Also, roll up ties, belts and scarves and place them in the caps to protect them while in the suitcase. Cover bowls of food before putting them in the refrigerator. Place under hanging plants (when watering) to contain drips. — Heloise

Is wild rice actually rice?

Dear Readers: No! It’s the grain of a tall grass that grows in water in Minnesota and California. It’s also called water rice, and you usually buy it mixed with white rice. It has a nutty flavor. Wild rice goes great with duck and game, and you can boil it or bake it. Add onions, butter, mushrooms or sliced almonds to enhance the flavor. — Heloise

Fabric quick fixes

FYI: Many of the fabrics in our house are used daily, and we don’t pay attention to them unless there is a spill or emergency. But here’s what you can do to refresh fabrics in between cleanings.

Dryer: You can freshen most pillows, bedspreads, comforters and curtains just by putting them, along with a fabric-softener sheet, into the dryer on the “air” setting for a couple of minutes.

Vacuum with upholstery and crevice attachment: Dust off heavy drapery, fabric-covered chairs and couches with the vacuum and attachments. — Heloise

How to freeze a cake

Dear Readers: Here’s how to freeze a cake successfully. Try to freeze it without the filling or frosting because that will make the cake a bit soggy. After the cake has cooled completely, wrap it in several layers of plastic and put it in a container so it won’t get crushed. To thaw the cake, don’t take the wrapping off, but allow it to thaw at room temperature for about an hour. Unfrosted cakes will freeze nicely for up to three months, but frosted ones last only about one month. — Heloise
