NASCAR to honor Greenon victims
3 students who died in car crashes to be remembered.
The Greenon High School student who was killed in a crash Sunday will be honored by a NASCAR team along with the two other students who were killed earlier this year.
Kenny DePhillip will be added to a NASCAR decal on Jimmy Means Racing’s No. 26 NASCAR Infinity Series car driven by Joey Gase.
“It was automatic,” Gase’s team engineer Mark Sanders said of adding DePhillip to the decal.
Sanders is a graduate of Greenon and lives in Clark County.
“All those lives carry the same value and same weight,” he said. “I think for the people who knew and love him, this was the right thing to do.”
Pictures of Connor Williams and David Waag, who were killed in a car accident in August, were placed on the car after the two boys died. Their families were also invited to a recent race by the Gase team.
The decal will be placed on the car behind the driver and the rear bumper. Sanders said along with honoring the teens, he hopes the decals serve as a reminder to teen drivers to be safe.
“I hope that they remember all three of the young men’s smiles and contributions to friends and family and to remember to buckle up,” he said. “And to slow down. I know by the grace of God I am still here because I thought I was invincible too.”
He said the existing decals with Williams and Waag onthem will be removed from the car to make room for the new decal. He said one of those decals will be given to Greenon High School so the boys are never forgotten. The other two decals will be given to Williams’ and Waag’s family, if they want them, Sanders said.
The decals will be on the race car for the rest of the season, beginning at Kansas City Speedway this weekend.
