DE Ogbah fractures foot, out for season

- By Mary Kay Cabot

Another week, another Browns starting defender out for the season.

This week, it’s defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, who broke his foot in the first half of Sunday’s 19-7 loss to the Jaguars.

Last week, it as Jamie Collins, who was lost for the year to a torn MCL.

Coach Hue Jackson acknowledged that Ogbah will miss significant time, but a source said he’s lost for the season because the Browns have only six games left.

“He’s (played well),” rookie defensive end Myles Garrett said. “It’s rough seeing one of your brothers go down, especially when the tide was definitely turning in your favor. He’s a main part of that. He’s one of the key parts of our defense.”

Jamie Meder, a key backup on the defensive line, also left in the first half with an ankle injury and did not return.

The loss of Ogbah was costly because he’s been playing well and was in the midst of another excellent game.

In the second quarter, Ogbah batted down a bubble screen to Marqise Lee, and then batted down a third-down ball at the line of scrimmage to kill a drive.

Ogbah had come alive over the past few games, especially with Garrett back in the lineup on the other side. Last week in Detroit, he had two sacks.

Late in the second quarter Sunday, Ogbah and Garrett converged quarterback Blake Bortles and wrapped him up to force an incompletion.

Ogbah limped off after the play to have the foot checked, and did not return.

He was replaced by Carl Nassib. Ogbah’s four sacks are tied for the team lead with Garrett.

“I really don’t think enough is being said about how far and how well Emmanuel is doing,” defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said Friday. “I don’t think he has even come close to how good he could be yet. You are seeing less robotic thinking.

“I’m not saying that in a negative way, but his confidence in knowing what to do and his confidence in knowing that I have his back and letting him go has been very good. I think he is going to continue to grow.”
