Man gets life for shooting guard

-

An Akron man was sentenced Monday to life in prison for the shooting death of a security guard earlier this year at a local bar, prosecutors said.

Cleveland.com reports Thomas Dunn, 20, previously pleaded guilty to aggravated murder with a gun specification in the March 7 killing of Daniel Turner at Game 7 Bar and Grill in Akron.

Dunn, who was 19 at the time of fatal shooting, will be eligible for parole after serving 23 years in prison, prosecutors said.

Dunn tried to enter the bar for a concert but was turned away. He later returned with a gun and started shooting at a group of security guards at the front door, authorities said.

Turner, 33, was struck by the gunfire and later died.

No bond was set at a hearing Monday.

Bankston called police at 1:53 p.m. Sunday for a possible overdose. He was at the house when an ambulance and police arrived on the scene, Stell said.

Police discovered Pyles who was alive, but unresponsive, he said. She was flown by helicopter to MetroHealth in Cleveland, where she died early Monday, he said.

“Her physical condition led (police on the scene) to believe it was more of a felonious assault than an overdose,” Stell said. “Officers also found evidence of a fight inside the house.”

Police are unsure what time the suspected assault took place. Bankston called police on Sunday, but it is possible it happened Friday or Saturday, Stell said. in contempt and imposed 30 days in jail.

The man repeated the insult as he was going out the door a second time. The judge asked deputy sheriffs to bring him back to the courtroom, where he blew kisses at her. She calmly increased his penalty to 120 days.

If the defendant eventually is convicted in the rape case and is sent to prison, the 120 days won’t be credited toward his sentence.

Defense attorney Karen Phipps had asked the judge not to increase the penalty, explaining that her client is mentally ill.

“He has an extensive history of mental-health issues, including anger issues,” she said afterward. “Once he loses his temper, it’s hard for him to regain control.”
