Browns have two alternates but no Pro Bowl selections

- By Nate Ulrich

The Browns did not have a player selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time since the 2006 season, but Joe Schobert and Joel Bitonio were named alternates Tuesday night.

Schobert is a first alternate at middle linebacker. Bitonio is a second alternate at guard.

Future Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas made the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons after the Browns selected him third overall in 2007, but he wasn’t eligible this year. Players must be on the active roster in Week 13 to eligible for a Pro Bowl nod, and Thomas was placed on injured reserve after suffering a season-ending torn left triceps tendon in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans.

Schobert, a fourth-round pick last year, has started all 14 games this season and compiled a team-high 127 tackles, including 2.5 sacks, two passes defensed, an interception and three forced fumbles. According to NFL.com‘s count, Schobert is tied for the league lead in tackles.

Bitonio, a second-round pick in 2014, bounced back from the season-ending Lisfranc injury he suffered last year and has started all 14 games at left guard.

Kindred on IR: The Browns placed starting strong safety Derrick Kindred on injured reserve and signed cornerback B.W. Webb.

Kindred suffered a wrist injury in Sunday’s 27-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the home finale. It’ll be worth monitoring in the final two games whether the Browns move rookie Jabrill Peppers from free safety to strong safety, a position head coach Hue Jackson has said the first-round draft pick from the University of Michigan is better suited to play.

Kindred started 10 of the 14 games in which he appeared this season and has 54 tackles, six pass breakups and one interception.

A fourth-round draft pick in 2013, Webb has started 10 of his 49 career regular-season games, compiling 61 tackles, 14 passes defensed and two interceptions during his time with the Dallas Cowboys, Steelers, Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints.

The Browns also signed defensive back Trevon Hartfield to the practice squad.
