Log cabin home damaged by fire
A family of five was left homeless Saturday evening when a hard to extinguish attic fire severely damaged the large log cabin home at 2651 Plymouth Gageville Road.
The fire was called in around 5:30 p.m. said Sheffield Fire Chief Claude Kobernik. He said seven departments ended up helping fight the blaze and one Sheffield firefighter suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze and was transported to the hospital.
He said the firefighter had minor burns and suffered smoke inhalation but was treated and released from the hospital late Saturday evening.
The fire departments included Sheffield, North Kingsville, Plymouth, Kingsville, Pierpont, Conneaut and Monroe, Kobernik said.
It took firefighters hours to stop the smoke streaming from both ends of the log cabin. Kobernik said the fire was difficult to fight because of the large wooden beams.
Kobernik said the fire started in the fire place. He said the home would likely be a total loss with damage estimated of at least $150,000.
Kobernik said the family would be staying with friends.
Fire trucks lined the road for almost a quarter mile on Saturday night near the Evergreen Road intersection.
Axes and chain saws were used to ventilate the western portion of the home. A group of young firefighters protected the home’s driveway and volunteers brought hot drinks to the firefighters.
