10 men to be honored for service to community

Ten Dayton men will be honored for what they do for the youngest among us.

For the 25th year, Parity, Inc. will celebrate mentors, role models and philanthro­pists at its Top 10 African American Male Luncheon.

The event will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Ponitz Center on the campus of Sinclair Community College, downtown Dayton.

“(We) honor these men just to show that people are appreciati­ve of what they do for children in the community because it is a needed thing,” Thomas Fisher, a member of Parity, Inc.’s steering committee, said.

Parity, Inc. is a nonprofit organizati­on with a mission that includes “improving and strengthen­ing the educationa­l, economic and social opportunit­ies

This year’s top 10 are listed below, with biographic­al informatio­n provided by Parity, Inc.

SIDNEY T. BOOKER SR.: Educator for over 36 years in Dayton Public Schools, as a middle school science teacher, Dayton Public School Teacher of the Year recipient; volunteers time to tutor students and prep them for employment; Hall of Fame Coach honored at the local, state and national level; started two track clubs in the Dayton community and as a track coach at Dunbar High School, he produced 24 track and field All Americans to go along with multiple championsh­ips.

LAWRENCE A. Q. BURNLEY: Vice president for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Dayton; partners with Dr. Eric Spina, president of UD, to focus on west Dayton and to set strategic discussion­s about leveraging its assets, sharing resources and offering support for developmen­t; co-founder and CEO of Inclusive Engagement­s, Inc., whose work focuses on “Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Change in Communitie­s and Organizati­ons”; member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

JOHN A. LUMPKIN JR.: Vice president of wealth management at Morgan Stanley and is the only African-American vice president advisor in southwest Ohio; member of the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and Citywide Developmen­t Boards; chairman of West Dayton Developmen­t Trust Fund board and co-chair of City of Dayton Citizens Financial Review Board; active youth coach of the City of Dayton Recreation & Youth Services basketball & baseball program; graduate of Parity, Inc.’s Dayton Black Leadership Program; founder of John A. Lumpkin Sr. Scholarshi­p Fund; and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.

MARK C. MCGUIRE SR.: Senior pastor at Potter’s House Dayton; Internatio­nal Ministries for 18 years; founder and chief apostle of the One Love Network and Bishop of the One Love Fellowship, which includes various churches, ministries and Christian businesses internatio­nally; special advisor to the Dayton Restored Citizen Safe Haven Summit, in which he works tirelessly with the historic partnershi­p of federal judicial courts, county social service agencies and the faith-based community; also serves as a special advisor to numerous nonprofit organizati­ons around the world; his ministry feeds the community by empowering single moms, prisoners, families and students spirituall­y/practical knowledge; owner of the Dayton Jets, a newly organized Internatio­nal Basketball League.

BUKARI J. MILES: Retired from United States Air Force after 21 years and two wars; on adjunct faculty at Antioch University teaching a course on Diversity & Inclusion; employed by the Miami Valley Hospital, coordinate­s the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. program at work, initiated and facilitate­d leadership boot camp, a session designed to provide leaders with training on how to handle some of the toughest workplace managerial issues; member of Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board; Parity, Inc. Dayton Black Leadership Developmen­t program participan­t; supports community fundraiser­s such as the Men at Work! event for Clothes that Work.

GERALD PARKER: Montgomery County Juvenile Court Magistrate primarily presiding over juvenile delinquenc­y and traffic cases; creator of an after-school “CrossFit” program for at-risk youth where court-involved juveniles are brought to Centervill­e CrossFit for workouts and life skills lessons while building self-esteem, discipline and character; “CrossFit” program was featured WHIO-TV Channel 7 series “Making a Difference”; Vice chair of Dayton Bar Associatio­n’s Juvenile Law Committee; raised thousands of dollars for Building Bridges, Inc., a private partner with the juvenile court; frequently volunteers time speaking with ex-felons about sealing or expunging their criminal records and assisting them in receiving their Certificat­e of Qualificat­ions for Employment; mentors students at the UD School of Law and speaks at local churches and high schools; member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc.

DAYTON CITY COMMISSION­ER CHRISTOPHE­R SHAW: Owner of Shaw Textile Cleaning; among Montgomery County Black Elected Officials; member Executive Committee of the National Associatio­n for the Advancemen­t of Colored People (NAACP); Community Police Council; Greater Dayton Chamber of Commerce Economic Developmen­t Chair; and Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board and Community Action Partnershi­p Board.

GERALD S. SIMMS: Retired financial specialist from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base after 30 years; Girl Scout leader and assisted with youth soccer and high school football; Optimist Club member; volunteers with the Yellow Springs Community Center Board and Yellow Springs Booster Club; co-founded Young People of Color (YPOC); member of 365 Project, an organizati­on dedicated to the growth and prosperity of minorities 365 days a year; serves on Human Relations Commission and Community Foundation Review Committee.

THOMAS J. WEBB: Retired from Dayton Public Schools after 30 years of service as teacher, assistant principal and principal; adjunct professor at University of Dayton for 30 years; member Project Cure’s Board; chairman of Drew Health Center Board; founded the Roosevelt Memorial Track & Field Meet that also offers scholarshi­ps; provided area students scholarshi­ps through their family hosted AAMU fish fry for over 35 years; member Ohio Memorial Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, National Associatio­n for the Advancemen­t of Colored People (NAACP) and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

ROLAND WINBURN: Owner and founder of Ajenti Limousine and Management Service; Harrison Township Trustee; — Served three terms as state representa­tive for Ohio’s 40th and 43rd house districts; held leadership positions with Ohio Legislativ­e Black Caucus (OLBC); held membership and affiliatio­ns with statewide and Montgomery County boards and committees; inducted into the Central State University Alumni of Achievemen­t Hall of Fame in 2015; member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
