OHIO POLICE OFFICERS GUNNED DOWN ON DUTY

■ FEB. 10, 2018: Westervill­e police officers Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli were gunned down upon arriving at a domestic dispute in response to a 911 hang-up call. The caller had previously told police her husband, alleged shooter Quentin Smith, was violent and had a gun even though he had a criminal history prohibitin­g having firearms. Another man was charged with buying the gun for Smith, who was shot but survived and is facing charges.

Girard police officer Justin Leo was fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbanc­e call. Another officer returned fire and killed the shooter, Jason Marble, who had a criminal history.

■ May 12, 2017

Kirkersvil­le Police Chief Eric DiSario was shot and killed by Thomas Hartless, who shot his way into the nursing home where Hartless’ girlfriend worked and killed her and a co-worker before turning a gun on himself. Authoritie­s confiscate­d 64 guns from Hartless’ home, though as a convicted felon he was prohibited from having guns. His father said he likely bought the guns at a gun show. ■ April 12, 2016

Columbus SWAT team officer Steven Smith was fatally shot while in the turret of an armored vehicle during a standoff with Lincoln Rutledge, who officers were serving with a warrant for setting his ex-wife’s house on fire. Rutledge was sentenced to life in prison.

■ Jan. 17, 2016

Danville police Officer Thomas Cottrell was shot and killed by Herschel Ray Jones outside the village municipal building. Cottrell’s body was found, without his gun or cruiser, after a woman called police and said her ex-boyfriend, Jones, threatened to kill her and was looking to kill a police officer. Jones was apprehende­d within hours and later sentenced to life in prison. It was his fourth time sent to prison.

Cincinnati police Officer Sonny Lee Kim was shot and killed by Trepierre Hummons, who had called police on himself and then ambushed Kim. Another responding officer fatally shot Hummons, who some allege was intending suicide by cop after his girlfriend filed rape charges against him.

■ March 19, 2011

Sandusky police Officer Andrew Dunn was shot and killed by Kevin Randleman, whom Dunn had stopped because Randleman was riding his bicycle without a light in the middle of the night. Randleman, who was prohibited from having a gun because of prior felony conviction­s, was sentenced to life in prison.

■ Jan. 1, 2011

Clark County Sheriff ’s Deputy Suzanne Hopper was shot and killed at the Enon Beach campground while responding to a call that someone had shot at a trailer. The shooter, Michael Ferryman, was prohibited from having guns after a previous incident in which he shot at police. Ferryman was killed and another officer was wounded in a standoff. Ferryman’s girlfriend was convicted of buying a gun for him.
