Piqua man gets 16 months in assaults

A Piqua man who assaulted a pregnant woman and child and threatened others while high on methamphetamine was sentenced Tuesday to 16 months in prison by a Miami County judge who called him a danger to himself and the community.

Daniel Orndorff, 22, was sentenced in Miami County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to felony domestic violence and a charge of abduction amended to attempted abduction in a Nov. 23 incident in Piqua.

Orndorff apologized for his actions and asked for a fair sentence. Public Defender Steve Layman said Orndorff was remorseful, adding he had been awake for several days when he allowed “things to get out of hand.” Paul Watkins, assistant county prosecutor, called Orndorff a “serious danger.”

Police reports said the woman was assaulted, a young boy thrown when he attempted to leave the home and a young girl threatened with an ashtray. Orndorff possessed a knife during the incident, which included the woman and children not being allowed to leave the house for several hours.

Judge Jeannine Pratt outlined details of the incident before ordering the sentence. “Your ac t ions in this case were dangerous and troubling. You were high on meth for eight days straight,” Pratt said. “You are a danger to yourself, to others and to the com- munity.”

Orndorff was given credit for 90 days served in the county jail.
