Ashtabula shootings might be related

-

A 70-year-old Ashtabula man is recovering from a gunshot wound to his back after someone fired shots into his Ogden Avenue home, according to Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell.

The victim, whose name is not being released, told police he and his wife were awakened at 1:52 a.m. Wednesday by the sound of gunshots.

An ambulance was called and the victim was taken to the hospital, Stell said.

Stell said police believe this shooting could be in retaliation for another shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon on West Avenue near West 19th Street.

Police were called about 3 p.m. after a man was admitted to the Ashtabula County Medical Center with minor injuries he received from a spray of a broken car window glass.

The victim was the passenger in the front seat of a northbound vehicle on West Avenue when a second vehicle pulled up alongside the victim’s vehicle, also going north.

The driver of the second car, 22-year-old Jonah Lacey, is believed to have fired gunshots into the passenger side of the victim’s vehicle, striking the car several times, Stell said.

No one was shot but the victim received minor injuries from the broken glass, Stell said. The driver of the victim’s vehicle drove to the hospital and police were notified of his passenger’s injuries.

Officers later stopped Lacey’s vehicle near Route 6 and Route 11, Stell said.

Lacey now faces three counts of felonious assault, one count of failure to comply, one count of tampering with evidence and one count of improper handling of a firearm, a court official said.

Lacey remains in jail on a $200,000 cash or surety bond, according to court records.
