Ohio woman hospitalized in salmonella outbreak
A 73-year-old Ohio woman was hospitalized as part of a five-state salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recalling pre-cut melon and pre-made fruit salads with melon at grocery chains in Ohio because of potential salmonella bacteria contamination.
No deaths have been reported, the CDC announced in Friday afternoon, but 32 people have been sickened in Michigan and one in Ohio as part of the outbreak that has also stretched into Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.
Ohio’s case of salmonella infection linked to pre-cut melon is a 73-year-old Hancock County woman.
Her illness onset was in May and she was hospitalized, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
The Hancock County Health Department is investigating.
The woman’s case is the only case in Ohio that’s part of the outbreak.
Caito Foods produced the fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and freshcut fruit medley products at its facility in Indianapolis, according to the CDC.
The recalled products were sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.
The investigation is ongoing to determine if products went to additional stores or states. Only pre-cut melon is affected by the recall. Whole melon is still OK to eat, the CDC said.
The woman’s case is the only one in Ohio in the outbreak.
