AFRL’s top scientist takes job at OSU

A former COLUMBUS — high-ranking scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory atWright-Patterson will become senior vice president for research at Ohio State University.

Morley O. Stone will earn a base salary of $420,000 to oversee an $864 million researchpr­ogramthrou­ghout the university­when he takes the job in August, according to Ohio State.

Stone, whorecentl­yretired, helpedopen­adowntownD­ayton satellite offiffice to collaborat­ewithinnov­atorsandte­chnology start-upsandpurs­ued commercial­izationoft­echnology out of AFRL’s labs.

He hasmore than 25 years experience in research and developmen­tandhelped­oversee a $2.3 billion internalAi­r Forcebudge­t and$2.5billion budget funded by government agencies and industry at AFRL.

He was involved in awiderange of research, spanning molecular systems biotechnol­ogy to human performanc­e. He started as amaterial research engineer at the Materials andManufac­turing Directorat­e atWright-Patterson in 1992 and rose to chief technology offifficer of AFRL.

“Throughout­hiscareer, Dr. Stone has built strong, strategic collaborat­ion with academia, industry and government­organizati­ons, including Ohio State,” university President Michael Drake sad in a statement.

A former chief scientist at the 711th Human Performanc­eWing and amanager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Stone ledAFRLpar­tnerships withDARPA, theNationa­lScienceFo­undation, NASA, and the Defense Health Agency.

Stone has more than a dozen patents and invention disclosure­s, OSU said.
