Society of Artists to host ‘monumental’ exhibit
The Dayton Society of Artists announces a three- person exhibition featur- ing Alan D. Pocaro, Frank Spidale and Lindsey Steelman. The DSA Project Space features “Becoming Monumental” by Leslie Robinson. The opening reception is Friday, July 6, 6-9 p.m. The exhibition runs July 6Aug. 4, 2018.
Alan D. Pocaro received his MFA from Miami University and currently resides and teaches in Charleston, IL. Pocaro applies printmaking techniques sourcing iconic figures from the 15th century Renaissance painter Pierro della Francesca in tones of burnt sienna. Upon this Pocaro responds in symbolic written language and marks developing the space.
Frank Spidale is a midcareer artist whose largescale paintings of landscapes expand space in their desaturated dark neutral tones. He works from direct observa- tion and in the studio. Spidale lives and keeps a studio near Chicago.
Lindsey Steelman is an emerging artist and recent graduate of the DAAP program at the University of Cincinnati. Steelman’s paintings are all 16 h. x 12 inches in oil and acrylic on panel. Steelman applies saturated colors in abstracted small surfaces until they begin to “vibrate and form weird sensations”.
Robinson shares: “Becoming Monumental is a body of work that “explores the way we use monuments and symbols to uphold patriar- chal notions of nationalism through knitting and per- formance.”
Robinson uses knitting, video and performance as a means to investigate cultural assumptions. “I’m interested in breaking down the language, symbols, and actions that define power in various relationships and within such institutions as art, politics, and academia ,”Robin- son says.
The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays 12 to 5 p.m. for viewing. Free parking is available in the lot directly opposite the gallery, which is located in the historic St. Anne’s Hill District.
