Park to hold reopening after lead cleanup

- STAFF REPORT

A Miami Twp. park that was closed nearly three years ago for lead contamination is set to reopen today.

Layer Park at 4999 Cordell Drive will host a “grand reopening” event from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., according to Miami Twp.

The free event will feature a newly refurbished recreational area containing new play equipment and a new swing set, and two new half-basketball courts.

The shelter is renovated, including two new grills, and there are more than 60 newly planted trees, according to the township. The celebration will include a treasure hunt tour, games, lemonade stand, raffle, basketball with a police officer, and an up-close look at a Miami Valley Fire District fire truck.

The park’s celebration comes just a little more than a year after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began removing lead-contaminated soil from its grounds.

The agency brought in earth-moving equipment to take away nearly 6,000 tons of soil from the 7.5-acre park and one adjoining private property, according to the EPA.
