Kettering earns award for active volunteer program
The City of Kettering was recently honored with the Award of Merit Award by the National Association of Volunteer Programs in Local Government (NAVPLG) for the Kettering Leadership Academy.
The award was presented at the Points of Light: National Conference on Volunteering and Service in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 18.
The Kettering Leadership Academy (KLA) was created in 2003 with the mission to create an active network of informed and concerned citizen volunteers. Since the program was established, approximately 150 residents have participated, and three-quarters are active volunteers in the community.
The Kettering Leadership Academy is a nine-month program designed for citizens to learn about every major aspect of Kettering community life through presentations, discussions and direct experience. Graduates go on to provide community leadership by becoming board members for local nonprofit organizations, participating in community initiatives and serving as ambassadors for our City. This is an idea that can be replicated by other communities throughout the nation,” said Leigh Kottwitz, Past President of NAVPLG and Neighborhood Services Manager for the City of Columbia, Missouri. “Volunteer managers play an important role in mobilizing people to make a difference in their communities. The Kettering Leadership Academy is a perfect example of engaging residents.”
