Police: Boy found gun while playing in yard

-

A boy and his father discovered a gun in their backyard, according to a Dayton police report.

Officers responded to the 200 block of North Cherrywood Avenue around 6:49 p.m. Thursday.

The man reported that his son was shooting a BB gun at targets in the back yard when he noticed a black, metal object in the yard.

When the boy realized the object was a gun, he notified his father, read the report.

The man told officers that he did touch the gun to make sure that there wasn’t a round in the chamber, according to the report.

He reportedly does not know whom the firearm belongs to and added that this is not the first time they’ve found a gun in their yard.

The man also said that he’s seen unknown people run through his yard, read the report.

Officers checked their records to confirm that the gun was not stolen and noted that it was loaded with three rounds in the magazine, according to the report.

“We have a child at the bottom of the pool ... been down there for 4 minutes,” a 911 caller reported to dispatchers. “We just pulled him out.”

A 911 caller said the child was between the ages of 6 and 8, and two lifeguards were performing CPR.

The incident is assigned to a detective, a Dayton police spokesperson said Friday, adding that no other information’s available.

There was a sign on the Lohrey Recreation Center’s door Friday morning indicating that its pool is closed.
