The School for KETTERING —

Advertising Art has changed its name and has a new vision.

The school — now the Modern College of Design — wants to build residential apartments for student housing, but the idea is still pending with the school and the city of Kettering.

After a public hearing in April, council members unanimously approved an ordinance to rezone two properties as an “Office” designation. Council also declined to take action on a third parcel that could have been the site of student housing.

The two approved properties are north of David Road. The “Office” zoning helps the SAA in its plan to offer four-year degrees, something its previous zoning did not allow.

The city council indicated a decision on the remaining parcel, the city-owned fire station land, would be made later, if SAA moves forward with the plan.

SAA President Jessica Barry told the city council it is important for students and their families to have housing that is con-

trolled by the school for the students’ first year.

She added that this would provide the safety and security most colleges offer to their freshmen.

SAA is also undergoing a name change that officially happened last Friday, as the Modern College of Design became the new name.

Heather Zehringer, director of marketing and communications for SAA, said the school held an open house Saturday as part of the new name’s unveiling.

She said staff, students, prospective students, administrators and faculty attended the open house and the public had a chance to tour the facility and ask questions.

“We are very happy with our transition of going from a ‘school’ to a ‘college,’” she said.

The newly-named Modern College of Design also celebrated its new motto: “Fueled by Passion - United in Design.”

The college is planning to update its associate degree program this fall and is planning the addition of a bachelor’s degree in design leadership that Zehringer said is being planned for a fall 2019 launch.

According to the school’s website the tuition for the first year is $27,778 and for second year is $27,415. The for-profit SAA estimates that fees and supplies will have a combined cost of $7,910. The estimated cost to finish the program is $63,103.
