Harbaugh happy to have Trotwood grad on his staff

Michigan footCHICAGO — ball coach Jim Harbaugh isn’t afraid to shut down conversations he doesn’t care for.

Find the right topic, though, and he will go on and on.

How about Roy Roundtree?

“I could talk a lot about him,” Harbaugh said Monday at the Big Ten Football Media Days in Chicago. “He’s a shining star. He’s gonna be a fantastic coach.”

Roundtree joined the Michigan coaching staff as a graduate assistant earlier this year, and Harbaugh is already a big fan.

“He brings a lot,” the head coach of the Wolverines said of the former Michi- gan receiver.

“He’s played the position, played it at a high level. Knows what those do-ordie situations are like. He’s a real cerebral guy. He already has experience coaching at Indiana State as a full posi- tion coach. So he brings a lot to the table.”

Roundtree caught 154 passes for 2,304 yards in five years at Michigan after starring at Trotwood-Mad- ison High.

He spent the 2013 preseason with the Bengals and played indoor football before getting into the coaching ranks in 2015 at Colorado State-Pueblo.

After one year at Lime- stone College and another at Indiana State, he is back at his alma mater as a grad- uate assistant coaching receivers.

“He’s a joy to be around, too,” Harbaugh said. “He’s got personality. He’s enthusiastic, and he’s not afraid to talk. He’s not afraid to give his opinion and (he has learned) that if you’re gonna have an opinion, support it. He doesn’t get rattled. Then whatever decision is made by the staff, he’s gung-ho about it.”

Roundtree has impressed at least one other former Wolverine, too.

Former Browns receiver Braylon Edwards called Ro u ndtree “the secret weapon” of the coaching staff earlier this year.

“He’s only been here for a bit, but I don’t think it’s too early to say that,” Edwards said. Contact this reporter at 937225-2396 or email Marcus. Hartman@coxinc.com.
