Man charged after double shooting

-

Columbus police have arrested a man in a Tuesday morning shooting that left a Southeast Side man dead and a woman in critical condition.

Marquis Denzell Braxton, 25, of the South Side, is charged with murder in the death of 27-year-old Derrich Franklin Bradford, who was killed inside a home, police said.

Officers were alerted to the shooting after family members took the victims to Ohio State University Hospital East shortly after 6 a.m. Bradford died there at 7:33 a.m.

Police didn’t identify the woman who was shot. She eventually was taken to Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, where she was in critical condition Tuesday evening.

Investigators pieced together what led to the shooting through interviews with witnesses.

They said that Braxton got into a fight with Bradford and the woman inside the home early Tuesday morning. The nature of the argument that preceded the shooting is unclear, police said.

Police say Braxton fired multiple shots, then fled in a vehicle. He was arrested later and was in the Franklin County jail Tuesday night.

Court records show Braxton has prior convictions for burglary and aggravated robbery and has spent time in prison. He was released in April 2017 from a 2011 robbery, according to the state Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

Braxton also has a pending case in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, accused of possessing drugs and tampering with evidence.
