Where you can see classical, jazz, folk and more
A strong slate of orchestral, vocal and chamber performances will take place throughout the 2018-2019 season.
The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s season of emotional “Vistas” takes audiences into the music of Beethoven, Bernstein, Mozart, Mahler and more on its Masterworks Series. The SuperPops Series is equally inviting thanks to tributes to Grammy-winning jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, Tony and Academy Award-winning songwriters Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe (“My Fair Lady,” “Gigi”), and Academy and Grammy Award-winning composer John Williams.
“More great hits from the king of movie music,” noted DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman. “(Also), the Lerner and Loewe show will (feature) ‘I Could Have Danced All Night,’ ‘If Ever I Would Leave You,’ ‘Thank Heaven for Little Girls,’ and ‘I’ll Go Home with Bonnie Jean.’ Need I say more?”
In addition to programming a season spotlighting Brahms, his favorite composer, Gittleman is excited to have Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning maestro John Mauceri guest conduct. Mauceri in particular is a champion of Broadway musicals and Hollywood film scores. He is also the newest member of the Tony Awards Nominating Committee.
“John’s the reason I got interested in conducting,” Gittleman said. “He led the Yale Symphony during my freshman and sophomore years of college. The joy of his music-making made me think that maybe conducting was a career path worth looking into. So far, so good. I’ve wanted to have John as a guest conductor for years, and the stars have finally aligned. Also, while we’ve kept in touch regularly over the years, John and I haven’t laid eyes on each other in almost 30 years, so it’ll be fun to catch up in person.”
In fact, while Mauceri works with the DPO, Gittleman will be rehearsing the Dayton Opera’s season finale “Salome,” featuring the return of soprano Kara Shay Thomson in the titular role. The Opera’s lineup also includes the peppy “Pirates of Penzance” featuring director Gary Briggle as the MajorGeneral, and the Opera Star Recital of inspirational bassbaritone Ryan Speedo Green.
Classical fans can also expect promising orchestral and vocal performances from such troupes as Bach Society of Dayton, Chamber Music Yellow Springs, Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra, Musica!, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and Wright State University. Variety abounds elsewhere courtesy of the Miami Valley Community Concert Association, University of Dayton and Miami University.
