The sun that greets you on a coming Sunday morning might have been created by a local man.

Artist Darrell McKinney of Yellow Springs said suns he submitted were selected to appear on CBS “Sunday Morning.”

“I can’t believe it,” said McKinney, who studied commercial arts at The Patterson Cooperative High School in Dayton. “When that producer sent me the green light for that, I was blown away. I was crying.”

McKinney has been watching “Sunday Morning” since it was hosted by Charles Kuralt, who co-founded it in 1979.

The show is now hosted by Jane Pauley.

McKinney said he was told the first of the suns he submitted is set to appear this month. The producer said she planned to use about six of them in total, he said.

This news organization has contacted the show in hopes of getting an air date.

Sunday Morning airs each week on WHIO-TV 7.

Like this news organization, WHIO is a Cox Media Group Ohio company.

The show uses multiple suns, most submitted by viewers, between stories.

The show is a Sunday morning tradition in McKinney’s home and one he has shared with his son.

He almost never misses an episode.

“To be able to be part of a show I’ve absolutely loved for 35 years is incredible,” McKinney said.

He likes everything from the arts and cultures to the political stories the show presents.

“When I hear the trumpet blare, I know it is 9 a.m.,” McKinney said of the show’s theme. “It is always uplifting. It is positive from block one all the way to the end. It is my religion.”

McKinney — a product demonstrator at Costco, a salesman at SVG Motors and the previous co- owner of the design company McKinney and Martha — said many of his friends do not know that he is an artist.

“To have a piece of my art being used that way is like being called down for the ‘Price is Right’,” McKinney, who has a background in culinary, said. “To have someone from a national news show say you work is good enough to be on her show; it is just flattering.”
