If you have old, bald tires junking up your place, then Montgomery County has a deal for you Sunday.

The county will pay $2 each for up to 10 scrap or used passenger car tires a resident turns in at its sixth annual Tire Buyback from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition to polluting waterways, properties and alleys, scrap tires create costly health and safety hazards, according to officials.

“Illegal dump sites are an eyesore, a nuisance, and a breeding ground for pests that can carry disease,” said Montgomery County Commission President Debbie Lieberman. “Our Tire Buyback offers an incentive for citizens to clean up dump sites, beautify their neighborhoods, and protect public health. This is a win-win for local jurisdictions, which are normally stuck footing the bill for cleaning up scrap tires and illegal dump sites.”

Tire fires — a constant concern at large repositories — can also release noxious chemicals and cause air pollution.

All tires collected at the event will be shredded and recycled into playground mulch, landfill liner and other materials, according to the county.

More than 78,000 tires have been collected since 2013. Last year, Montgomery County collected 14,985 tires weighing about 160 tons when more than 1,500 vehicles passed through the event.
