Springfield, Miamisburg only GWOC unbeatens

- By Marc Pendleton Staff Writer

Springfield and Miamisburg are the two remaining unbeaten high school football teams in the 20-member Greater Western Ohio Conference. Both are 5-0 after Week 5 wins Friday.

The teams are not scheduled to play in the regular season, but could be paired in the playoffs. Springfield improved to No. 2 in the Division I, Region 3 computer rankings following a 28-0 shutout of visiting Lebanon and Miamisburg bumped up to No. 3 after defeating Troy in a battle of unbeatens, 31-14.

Miamisburg opened with three straight defeats of nonarea opponents that have a combined three wins. Those were followed by a surprise 30-13 defeat of nemesis Wayne and backed up with a showdown victory at Troy.

That was the kind of bounce-back Vikings coach Steve Channell was looking for after Miamisburg went 4-6 last season and missed the postseason. Quarterback Tate Vongsy completed eight passes but was good for 193 yards and a touchdown against the Trojans. He also scored on two short runs.

Troy QB Brayden Siler had 218 yards passing and one TD toss. Miamisburg limited Troy running back Jaydon Culp-Bishop to 83 yards rushing and one score. He ranks No. 3 in GWOC rushing (712 yards). The loss plummeted Troy from No. 2 to sixth in the D-II, Region 8 computer rankings.

Miamisburg hosts Fairmont (4-1) in a Week 6 GWOC crossover contest.

Other notable Week 5 things to know:

■ Chaminade Julienne coach Marcus Colvin is feeling the No. 1 heat, and that’s a good thing. The D-III Eagles have been top-ranked in the two state football polls and solidified that lofty position with a 61-30 shootout defeat of visiting Carroll.

It’s the first time CJ has been ranked No. 1 since Colvin took over.

“It puts a bull’s-eye on our back I don’t want,” he said. “I don’t know how I truly feel about it, but it makes me feel good that people look at us and say we’re doing a good job.”

■ Springboro extended visiting Centerville’s winless season with a 35-0 shutout. Panthers QB Landon Palmer had 266 yards passing and three touchdowns. Moise Armbruster also had two scoring runs for Springboro (2-3).

Centerville, the defending GWOC National East champion (10-2), dropped to 0-5. The Elks have been outscored a combined 84-6 the last two weeks and host rejuvenated Wayne (3-2) in Week 6.

■ Butler’s Ryan Martin had a game-winning 11-yard TD run in overtime for a 13-7 defeat of Xenia. Butler’s Mason Motter had a 30-yard TD toss to Blake Ross. Xenia’s Sincere Wells scored on a 9-yard run with five minutes to play. Wells had 113 yards rushing and leads the GWOC with 972 yards and 11 TDs.

■ Dae’Vontay Latimer had 150 yards rushing and three touchdowns in Trotwood-Madison’s 48-13 defeat of visiting Piqua. It was the second straight win by the Rams (3-2) and snapped the Indians’ (3-2) three-game win streak.

■ Coldwater QB Jake Hemmelgarn completed 22 of 29 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns as the visiting Cavaliers rallied with 14 fourth-quarter points to overtake Fort Recovery 35-31 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

Coldwater’s Ben Wenning had eight catches for 173 yards and scored twice. Derek Jutte of Fort Recovery had 213 yards rushing on 37 carries and two TDs. Coldwater (5-0) is top-ranked in D-IV.

■ Marion Local (5-0) kept pace with Coldwater by defeating visiting Anna, 44-20. Marion Local and Coldwater are 3-0 in the MAC and headed to a Week 10 showdown at Coldwater that likely will decide the conference championship.

Seen & overheard: Bethel QB Jacob Ullmer had a unique way of preventing dehydration during a 52-28 loss at Miami East on Thursday. The senior downed small packets of mustard between second-half series.

“It has potassium and sodium, so it helps with cramps,” explained Bees trainer Kristina Fahrner.

Ullmer had 246 yards rushing and scored all four Bees touchdowns. That tangy treat made a quick convert of Bethel coach Scott Clodfelter. “We’ll have to get a big bottle of Heinz,” he said.
