Woman struck, killed by car during fight Life in prison for man in infant death case
Homicide detectives are investigating after a car struck and killed a woman during a fight Monday in Cleveland’s Bellaire-Puritas neighborhood, police said.
The 40-year-old woman was fighting another person when a car struck her about 5:45 p.m. on Astor Avenue near West 137th Street, police said. She died after being taken to Fairview Hospital.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released her name.

An East Toledo man who fatally injured an infant pleaded guilty to a lesser murder charge Tuesday and was sentenced to life in prison.
Zachery Shadix, 25, was originally charged with aggravated murder, felonious assault, and endangering children in connection to the Feb. 21 death of his girlfriend’s daughter, Gabrielle Walker. As part of his plea to the amended murder charge, the other charges were dismissed.
He could be eligible for parole after serving 15 years in prison.
Gabrielle suffered a head injury and a lacerated pancreas, among other injuries, after Shadix struck her, officials said.
The girl’s father, Tawne Walker, took the baby to the hospital to be examined Feb. 19 after he found several small bruises on her body, prosecutors said. The girl was cleared and returned home to her mother that evening.
Shadix stayed up drinking and playing video games, while the girl’s mother, Lisa Eck, and her 9-year-old son slept, prosecutors said.
The next morning, Eck awoke to see bruises on the baby, who was also reportedly lethargic.
Prosecutors said the mother frantically asked Shadix what happened to the child, while he rolled over and went back to sleep.
Eck took the baby to the hospital, where she later died. Her cause of death was ruled a homicide due to abusive head trauma by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office. Both Eck and Walker declined to comment in court. Shadix also declined to comment.
