The Ohio Department of Transportation is building a new facility in Greene County on vacant land that is primed for industrial development.

The $8.3 million project is underway at the corner of Innovation Way and Ohio 380 on the southern outskirts of the city of Xenia.

The new facility will replace ODOT’s existing facility at Ohio 380 and Ledbetter Road, said ODOT spokesman Brian Cunningham.

“The current building was built sometime in the early ’70s and no longer can accommodate current needs,” Cunningham said. “Trucks are bigger than they were in the ’70s, and it is difficult to store and conduct routine maintenance on them in the existing facility.”

The new facility will be located on the 12-acre site.

A purchase agreement was settled in 2015 for the state to buy the land from Greene County for $336,000, according to county records.

ODOT’s new garage is located on Innovation Way, which bisects more than 140 acres of county-owned land that is an Ohio Certified Site ready for development.

Infrastructure is already in place, including water, sewer,

electric, telephone and wireless access services.

The land is zoned to allow for heavy industrial use and it’s being marketed as a potential industrial park site, Greene County Development Director Paul Newman Jr. has said.

Last year, county commissioners decided against a plan to remove more than 16 acres of mature trees that stand on the property.

ODOT’s new facility will feature a 31,000-squarefoot main building, a 10,400-square-foot cold storage building, 6,000-square-foot salt barn, and a 32,000-gallon tank to store brine and aqua salina, according to ODOT.

The main building will feature space for office work, truck storage, mechanical storage, mechanics bays and a wash bay.

The salt barn will have 400-square-feet more storage space than the existing one on Ohio 380, Cunningham said.
