NOVA, 9 PM on Ch. 16 and Ch. 48; 1 AM on Ch. 16 and Ch. 48: A one-night, two-part special episode opens with “Volatile Earth: Volcano on Fire,” which follows volcano experts into the heart of the Virunga Mountains in the Democratic Republic of Congo, home to two of the most dangerous and least understood volcanoes in the world. The team climbs to the summits, dangerousl­y close to the gaping craters, to deploy state-of-theart imaging and remote sensing techniques. Their goal is to get data that will help predict when the next shattering eruptions could occur.

All American, 9 PM on Ch. 26: Though The CW still is informed largely by superhero shows, it makes one of its ventures into a different genre with this new drama about a star high-school football player (played by Daniel Ezra) who gets the chance to transfer straight out of Compton to a school in much-more-privileged Beverly Hills. Reconcilin­g those two worlds puts immense pressure on him, socially as well as athletical­ly. Taye Diggs also stars in the show from prolific producer Greg Berlanti.

Expedition Unknown, 9 PM on DSC; 1 AM on DSC: In the new “Hunt for the Yeti, Part 2,” explorer and host Josh Gates’ quest takes him higher into the slopes of the Himalayas, where he explores caves, examines ancient artifacts and studies the mystical link that seems to exist between the Yeti and the people of Nepal. Making his way to a monastery in Khumjung, Josh eagerly hopes to examine what is said to be a preserved Yeti scalp, but the monks deem it too holy to film.
