Man, 28, indicted in shooting death

A 28-year-old Dayton man faces murder and weapons charges in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, 17-yearold LaShonda Childs.

Trendell Lamont Goodwin was indicted Thursday on two counts of murder, three counts of felonious assault and two counts of discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises, according to a Montgomery County grand jury report. All of the charges are felonies, and each carries a three-year firearm specificat­ion.

Goodwin, who is being held on $1 million bail in the Montgomery County Jail, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.

Goodwin got into an argument with Childs and her boyfriend on Mumma Avenue when Goodwin allegedly pulled out a gun, reports state. Childs called 911, and the pair got into their car and were trying to drive away when Goodwin fired into the vehicle, reports state.

Childs was struck in the head. Her boyfriend drove her to Grandview Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.

“This 17-year-old victim had posted multiple times on social media about how scared she was of this defendant.” Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr stated in a release. “She even posted, ‘Domestic violence is real.’ Sadly, the defendant killed her. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic or dating violence, please, please, please get help and call 911. My office’s Victim/Witness Division offers a 24-hour hotline (937-225-5623) to assist in getting victims the help and safety they need.” on East Norman Avenue in Dayton, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

Henry was inside a residence when he grabbed a shotgun and shot and seriously wounded his brother, 41-year-old Lavar Cottrell. Henry then shot his brother’s girlfriend, 41-year-old Barbara Goubeaux, who died at the scene.

Cottrell succumbed to his injuries July 6 at a Cincinnati medical facility.

At the time of the shootings, Henry was wanted for a possible probation violation, with an arrest warrant issued May 22 stemming from a 2015 robbery conviction.

Henry will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least 30 years.
