THE CANDIDATES’ PLANS

These are highlights of each governor candidate’s plan to address the addiction crisis in Ohio.

MIKE DEWINE

■ Create at least 60 more specialize­d drug courts. Opposed to Issue 1.

■ Implement proven K-12 grade drug prevention education in all Ohio schools.

■ Expand workforce of addiction specialist­s, social workers, and other profession­als.

■ Provide incentives for employers to hire those in recovery and help employees with substance abuse disorder seek treatment while remaining employed.

■ Supports keeping Medicaid expansion but would like to make some changes, including possibly a work requiremen­t.

RICH CORDRAY

■ Protect Medicaid expansion and refocus money on prevention and proactive care.

■ Bolster local government funding and use funds from drug company lawsuits to help

expand treatment and prevention services.

■ Promote more non-opioid pain management through Medicaid coverage.

■ Provide support and resources for families and improve foster and adoptive services.

■ Supports Issue 1, which would lessen criminal punishment­s and promote treatment for some drug possession crimes.

TRAVIS IRVINE

■ Wants to roll back Medicaid expansion.

■ Fully legalize marijuana to combat opioid crisis.

CONSTANCE GADELL-NEWTON

■ Promotes universal health care plan that would closely monitor prescripti­on opioid use.

■ Supports decriminal­izing non-violent drug possession offenses.
