Charlotte’s mother died when she was 10 (in 1928) and her father a railroad worker moved to Dayton with his railroad position. While living in Dayton, Charlotte graduated from Steele High School (1936), and attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg Va. Charlotte left college early and returned to Dayton due to limited family resources. While in Dayton Charlotte worked as a stenographer at WPAFB. At some point (around 1940) Charlotte suffered a breakdown and was eventually subjected to shock treatments. Techniques to diagnose mental health issues were then in their early stages - many things were tried with varied success. In Charlotte’s case she reverted to the age of “16” and remained there indefinitely. Her diagnosis was schizophrenia. Charlotte never lived independently. Many family members took care of her over these ~ 80 years starting with her father, Robert then her brother Harry, her sister Evelyn and finally Evelyn’s son Robert who has been her legal guardian since Jan 2001. Charlotte was a patient of the Dayton State Hospital on Wayne Avenue from ~1954 -1984 she then moved to a group home “Fernwood” in North Dayton where she lived with some independence from 1984 to 2011. She then (at age 93) became immobile and in need of skilled nursing care. She moved to Friends Care Community on Oct 20th 2011. Charlotte maintained (the mental capability she had) until her last day. She could hold a conversation, tell you what she needed, say thank you all with remarkable clarity. She had none of the classic heath issues; no heart, lung, cancer or diabetes issues. In the end she simply died in her sleep. Charlotte was very pleasant to be around and she enjoyed music, reading, watching movies, spending time around others and she enjoyed eating fresh fruit and chocolate. On Tuesday Oct 16th, family and friends may call from 12:001:30 at Tobias Funeral Home (Beavercreek Chapel) 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek OH 45432. Services will immediately follow at 1:30 followed by her burial at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery, 8135 N Dixie Drive., Dayton OH 45414. The family wishes to thank the staff at Friends Care Community, Yellow Springs OH, for the quality of care Charlotte received during her 7 years there. The family also wishes to thank the Staff at Fernwood (Nila) and Eastway (Jill Marlow) for the care they provided to Charlotte.
