A Butler County man died Wednesday night in one of two Interstate 675 rush-hour wrecks that closed the beltway’s southbound lanes for several hours.

Killed in the crashes near the I-75 interchange was Kenneth Bourquein, 30, of Okeana, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. The wrecks were among a trio of accidents that clogged area highways late Wednesday and early Thursday.

Bourquein died in a Washington Twp. crash involving six vehicles that happened about 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, about a half mile away from another wreck that occurred about 4:30 p.m. in Miami Twp., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Reports of both accidents were incomplete Thursday, but I-675 southbound was shut down until about 11 p.m. between Ohio 725 and I-75. Rerouted traffic caused additional congestion on Ohio 725 and other routes the Dayton Mall area.

Initial reports indicated the fatal wreck involved a semitrailer and happened in traffic that was slowed and stopped from the earlier crash, a trooper with the state patrol said Wednesday night.

“It looks like it was just backed up traffic and someone ran into somebody else,” Trooper Andrew Meadors said. “It looks like traffic was probably backed up from that first crash.”

The first I-675 wreck involved two vehicles and property damage, Meadors said. On Thursday morning, a crash on U.S. 35 near Woodman Drive in Riverside around occurred about 8:10 a.m., blocking both eastbound lanes of the highway for about an hour.

The crash involved an SUV and dump truck. The driver of the SUV was the only one injured and was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, according to police. All lanes reopened by 9:30 a.m.
