Medical center opens food pantry for veterans

The Dayton VA Medical Center, in partnershi­p with the Dayton Foodbank, has opened a food pantry for veterans in need at the Dayton VA Medical Center campus inside building 305.

The purpose of this event is to address hunger within the veteran community. Veterans do not have to be currently enrolled with the VA to take advantage of this service. The food pantry operation will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 11 and 18, 2018, and Jan. 8 and 22, 2019.

Veterans are advised to bring a photo ID and a copy of their DD-214 to utilize the food pantry. Need is determined by income guidelines set by the Dayton Foodbank.

Pathways of Hope at Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton is offering a one-day grief support program designed to help youngsters and teens ages 7 to 17 who have experience­d the loss of a parent, sibling or significan­t loved one. Pathways Breakaway is free of charge and participat­ion is limited to 50. Advance registrati­on is required.

Pathways Breakaway is a daylong, grief-focused event bringing together children who have experience­d the loss of a parent or other loved one. Participan­ts will engage in age specific group activities such as swimming, navigating a life-sized labyrinth, and playing games—as well as grief management activities involving art, music, and discussion groups.

Lunch and snacks will be provided. Pathways Breakaway will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 —a day which most children will be out of school for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Kettering Recreation Center, 2900 Glengarry Dr. Breakaway is offered at no charge, but pre-registrati­on is required as the event will be limited to 50 children.
