Gap store at The Greene Town Center closing

- By Katie Wedell Staff Writer

The Gap store at The Greene Town Center is closing.

Gap Inc. previously announced in November that up to 200 of its namesake stores could close after poor earnings reports.

An employee at the Beavercreek location confirmed Saturday the store is having a going-out-of-business sale and will close but did not have a closure date and referred all other questions to Gap corporate offices.

Messages left for Gap Inc. and The Greene’s marketing department Saturday were not returned. There’s no word if any other Ohio stores are affected.

A number of clothing retailers have closed at local malls, including The Greene, in recent years as customer habits have shifted.

Women’s clothing store Lane Bryant closed its location at The Greene in 2017 followed by its sister store Loft in March of this year. A smaller clothing chain, Dry Goods, opened at outdoor shopping center this summer.

In November, Gap Inc. reported same-store sales at Gap stores, which includes Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, grew 7 percent last quarter, but the sales at the flagship Gap brand dropped 7 percent.

There are 775 global Gap stores, including Cincinnati Premium Outlets, Liberty Center and Jeffersonville Tanger Outlets. The outlet stores are doing well compared to other “legacy” stores, according to Retail Dive.

The Old Navy brand is doing well, adding 4 percent on top of last year’s 4 percent same-store gain. And Banana Republic stores are rebounding, posting a 2 percent same-store sales increase, compared to a 1 percent decline in the third quarter last year.
