Some tips to avoid problems with car rental during holidays

- John North

Millions of Americans are finalizing end-of-the-year travel plans. As you book your hotels and flights, don’t forget to book your rental car. Renting a car can give you great freedom and flexibility when you’re traveling, but the process can be difficult. Of course, you want the best deal, best coverage and safest option.

BBB offers these tips to help you save money and avoid problems with your car rental.

■ Do your research. Large car rental companies will have the most options to choose from, but depending on where you’re traveling, locally-owned companies could offer the lowest rates. Compare prices and read reviews before deciding.

■ Define the type of car you want to rent. Terms like “compact,” “mid-size” and “luxury” can vary across car rental companies. To illustrate car sizes, companies usually provide car models or suggest how many passengers the car seats safely.

■ Be sure the company you’re renting from offers any extras you may need, such as a car seat or GPS system. But, you may consider bringing your own to save money.

■ Understand your rental agreement. Whether you’re booking online or in person, read the terms and conditions carefully before confirming your reservation. Be sure to ask about restrictions and fees regarding out-of-state travel, drop-off charges, airport surcharges, early or late returns, taxes and breakdown charges. Always be sure to get a confirmation number.

■ Understand fuel compensation charges. Most companies require you to return your rental car with a full tank of gas. If you don’t, you will be charged the company’s price for gas, which is typically more than you would pay yourself.

■ Check out insurance coverage options. However, you may already be covered through your own auto or home insurance policies. Call your insurance company before purchasing coverage.

■ Inspect the car before you leave the rental company. Inspect the vehicle carefully for exterior and interior damage. Make sure the lights, turn signals and windshield wipers are working properly. Report any defects before you leave.

■ Ask about discounts, which may be offered through frequent flier programs, credit card programs, AAA, etc.

■ Keep in mind sometimes renting on the weekly rate can be cheaper than the day-today.
