DAILY BRIDGE CLUB:

I can’t cite any numbers to prove it, but I would bet that 20 percent of the population thinks statistics are overrated.

The percentage of bridge players may be higher — if today’s deal is any indication. At 1NT, South took the ace of diamonds and then the A-K of hearts, planning to concede the third heart. He would have three hearts, three diamonds and a spade, and (he expected) the defense could take at most five clubs plus a heart.

But when hearts broke 4-1, all bets were off. South next led a spade to his jack. West won and failed to find the club shift, but South still went down one.

If West continues diamonds, South wins and leads a heart to dummy and a spade to his 10. Two spade finesses yield about a 75 percent chance for a seventh trick.

DAILY QUESTION: You hold: ♠ 543 ♥ AK82 ◆ 6 43 ♣ 9 6 2. Your partner opens one diamond, you respond one heart and he bids two clubs. What do you say?

ANSWER: Bid two diamonds. Partner promises longer diamonds, so although your hand is weak, you must return to your 48 Italian cheese 49 James of the Lakers
