Fortnite Friday comes to Rec Center

- By Emily Kronenberger Staff Writer

America has been hit with a wave of young and old playing Fortnite, and the Vandalia Recreation Center has taken note.

The Rec Center will host a Fortnite Friday this Friday with prizes and free pizza for those who attend. They ask you bring your best squad to win.

Fortnite is a video game released in 2017 and developed by Epic Games. The game is a shooter-survival game with various scenarios and played on a variety of devices.

“This is something new we’re trying, so we’re really not sure what to expect,” said Parks and Recreation Director Steve Clark. “We know that Fortnite is a very popular game across the country, and we thought it would be fun to give Vandalia kids an opportunity to show off their skills.”

The top three finishers of the tournament will win the best prizes that include gift cards to GameStop and Vandalia Rec Center merchandise.

The tournament is for ages 12 to 15 with a fee of $10 for Vandalia residents and $12 for nonresidents. The event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rec Center on Stonequarry Road.

“Even though this event is being held at the Recreation Center, players do not need to be a member of the Rec Center to participate,” said Recreation Superintendent Jeff Kreill. “We’re excited to see what kind of response we get from this tournament. If it is well received, we might try another tournament down the road.”
