Here’s the problem with the First Amendment

- Amelia Robinson

The problem most people have with the First Amendment is that it applies to other people, too.

Short of yelling fire in the middle of a crowded theater or committing slander, we have a legal right to say just about anything we want due to that part of our nation’s most sacred documents.

The freedom of religion, press, peaceful assembly and to complain to the government are also in there. are consequences to every action.

Does a hate group have the right to peacefully assemble and vomit hate?

Yep.

Could a consequence be that the identities of the people hiding under cotton sheets are revealed for all the Internet to see?

Yep.

The law says you can legally say it, believe it, complain about it, write an article about it and gather with friends about it.

It also says other people can legally talk about what you just said, disbelieve it, complain about you, write an article about how wrong you are and counter protest.

The First Amendment gives “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor Chris Pratt the legal right to talk about his religious beliefs here, there and everywhere he wants.

It also gives people the right to say they don’t like it when Chris Pratt talks about his religious beliefs here, there and everywhere.

Thanks to our friend FA, the government can’t (or at least shouldn’t be able to) stop Pratt from going on and on about his church or stop people from criticizing him for going on and on about his religion.

The collection of rights that make up our friend FA are the foundation of who we are as Americans.

The First Amendment is the yin to its own yang.

Some people like the yin. Some people like the yang.

Neither would matter if the other were not there.
