Township fires officer, but no name released
Miami Twp. MIAMI TWP. — voted this week to dismiss a police officer, a move which came less than a week after a new police chief was named, according to a township trustee.
Trustees voted Monday morning to accept the recommendation of Police Chief Charlie Stiegelmeyer to dismiss an officer, according to John Morris, vice president of the board of trustees.
Morris said the vote occurred after an executive session during a special meeting.
“All of the minutes will be out and signed and published after this (Tuesday night’s) meeting — reflecting that special meeting,” he said. “The officer’s name is in that resolution.”
Morris said, “I think the comments regarding the specific nature of the dismissal should be made by the police chief.”
Messages left with Stiegelmeyer and Board of Trustees President Doug Barry on Friday were not returned in time for this article.
This news organization has requested a copy of the resolution approved by trustees, as well as the name and personnel file of the officer who was the subject of the trustees’ vote.
The vote by trustees came six days after Stiegelmeyer was promoted to police chief to succeed Ron Hess. On that same night, May 14, trustees named Hess fulltime administrator, a position he held on an acting basis while also serving as police chief.
Stiegelmeyer, 55, was hired in September by Miami Twp. as a captain after serving as director of the Tactical Crime Suppression Unit, which serves Centerville, Germantown, Kettering, Miamisburg, Moraine, Oakwood, Springboro and West Carrollton.
After Stiegelmeyer was sworn in as police chief he told Hess, trustees and officers in the department about his approach to running the department.
“I’ll work just as hard to make this agency go to the next level,” he said.
Addressing the officers specifically, Stiegelmeyer said, “I’m going to set the bar high.
“I am going to have high expectations,” he added. “I like to lead by example. I expect nothing but excellence.”
