MAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER BEING SHOT BY DAYTON POLICE

-

Dayton police DAYTON — were involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon during a gun violence reduction blitz that left a man in critical condition.

The man, who has not been identified, was in Miami Valley Hospital on Thurs- day night after three officers fired at him on Kosmo Drive in Dayton. The officers are on administrative leave — department policy — pend- ing the Montgomery County Sheriff ’s Office-led criminal investigation.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl explained what happened this way:

Police, conducting a gun violence reduction blitz, were monitoring a man suspected in other violent crimes. During the operation, officers spotted a vehicle with equipment and license vio- lations and began following it on Weaver Street about 12:27 p.m.

The vehicle fled, but was monitored by an Ohio State Highway Patrol helicopter, which relayed the vehicle’s location to law enforcement on the ground.

About 12:35 p.m., the vehi- cle pulled into the Georgetown Village apartment complex on Kosmo Drive. The driver got into a red car, which police blocked in. The passenger in the red car got out holding what Biehl said was a handgun with an extended magazine. When the three Dayton police offi- cers saw the gun, they all fired at the man, who was hit at least once in the chest.

The Dayton Police Department asked the sheriff’s office to handle the crimi- nal part of the investigation because one of the officers involved is a homicide detec- tive. That unit handles offi- cer-involved shootings. The police department’s Professional Standards Bureau will handle the administrative part of the investigation.

The Black Lives Matter Dayton group also issued a request: “Because of the sensitivity of police-community relations, Black Lives Matter Dayton calls on Dayton Chief of Police Richard Biehl to keep the commu- nity updated on the shooting as frequent as possible.”
